The 80’s part I – London

1982:  Years of the Foundation of a-ha!!!!

Originally, Pål had used the word ‘a-ha’ as the title of a song. He alternated between ‘a-ha’ and ‘a-hem’. As Morten was taking one of his frequent peeks through Pål’s notebook, he came across the name a-ha. “That’s a great name. That’s what we should call ourselves.” After a few weeks of getting the feel of the name and checking dictionaries in several languages, it was decided. They found out that ‘a-ha’ was an international way of expressing recognition, with positive connotations. It was short, easy to say and unusual

1983: Morten and Paal went to London and waited for Magne who came later same year

This is the first version of the song that later went on to become a worldwide hit, yet only sold 300 copies in the first version. The flip side on the 12″ single was the only release of the song “Stop and Make Your Mind Up!” Although only the instrumentation changed, the remix by Alan Tarney gained heavy rotation on MTV. Many people refer to this version as the ‘Blue’ version because of the blue background. There was originally another idea presented for “Take On Me” before the final, popular version which involved a-ha singing in from of a large crowd of very young female fans. A-ha were reportedly appalled at the idea, and refused to make the video. This was reportedly another reason that the first version is often called ‘Blue’ because of the inappropriate content that had been suggested.
